The 1967 bombings
Umm Qais: Historic Events: 1967 Israeli bombing of Umm Qais
Initial occupation of parts of Palestine by Israel ion 1948
Expansion of this in 1967 to encompass all of Palestine.
The topography of the area and the location of Umm Qais on high ground overlooking areas of Palestine, the Golan Heights and Lake Tiberius Umm Qais assumed a strategic significance. Several Jordanian Army units were based in and around the village and ruins. During the Arab-Israeli war of 1967, Umm Qais was heavily shelled and several of its village and rural structures were damaged. A room in Beit al-Rousan adjacent to the room in which the 1920 treaty was signed still exhibits remains of the damage from the shelling.
